About The National Gallery
The National Gallery was founded in 1824, with the galleries first 38 paintings coming from the private art collection of banker, John Julius Angerstein.
The galleries paintings are in the Western European tradition from the 13th to 19th centuries, and boasts over 2300 works. Famous paintings on display include van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, Velázquez’s Rokeby Venus, Turner’s Fighting Temeraire and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
